Full Sun (At Least 6 Hours Of Direct Sunlight)Mature Height 4 - 5 FeetMature Spread 3 - 4 FeetGrowing Zones 5 - 8Use As A Thriller In ContainersThe Generous Gardener® English Climbing Rose has all of the traditional traits of the perfect rose. The delicate, pink flowers bloom in clusters, filling the garden with the most delicious musky perfume. When fully open, each flower has the look of waterlilies floating on the surface of a pond. The Generous Gardener® will cover any arch or structure with fresh and perky flowers, no matter how hot the summer temperatures. The Generous Gardener® was introduced in 2002 and has proven to be a hardy climber for almost any garden situation. This rose will tolerate not only part shade and most soil types but will remain hardy during cold winters as far North as zone 4. The generous Gardener® is a low-maintenance climbing rose ideal for covering a structure or problematic sloped area. The Generous Gardener® English Climbing Rose CareClimbing roses require well-drained soil that is also moisture retentive. Plant them in full sun to part shade and mulch the root zone with 2-3 inches of compost, shredded leaves, or arborist chips. Provide one inch of water a week either from natural rainfall or drip irrigation. Keeping the foliage dry during watering lessens the chance of disease and pest infestation. Roses are hungry plants and require fertilizing at least twice a growing season. Apply a granular formulation for roses early in the spring and again when the first flower buds appear. Pruning for climbing roses is easy and should be done while the shrub is dormant during the winter or early spring. Remove any suckers that have grown out for the bud union. Remove any leggy or whippy growth from the main structural canes. Tie in any leaders you want to encourage to grow longer, and finally, cut back old growth to the first three buds on a central structural cane. Cutting a climbing rose below 2 feet will severely alter the overall spreading habit and is not helpful for rejuvenation. The Generous Gardener® English Climbing Rose SpacingThe Generous Gardener® is a compact climbing rose and perfect for covering a short arbor or sunny wall. The mature height is 5+ feet with a spread of 3-4 feet. Plant any companion shrubs or perennials 18 inches from the base to allow for proper air circulation.
